WWE Hall of Fame legend Shawn Michaels recently appeared on Jim Ross’ podcast The Ross Report to discuss a handful of topics about his return to WWE after his long hiatus after WrestleMania 14.
Michaels spoke about wrestling Vince McMahon at WrestleMania 22 in a No Holds Barred Match, happy that he wasn’t the main attraction and didn’t feel any pressure going into his bout against the boss.
“I just felt like having a WrestleMania where I wasn’t sort of expected to go out there and tear the house down,” said Michaels, “I just wanted to have one where it was just sort of relaxing and fun.”
Ross asked Michaels if he was disappointed he never feuded with The Rock, since they were arguably the two biggest stars in the company during the 1990s (along with Stone Cold Steve Austin). Michaels said he was willing to partake in a program against anyone, interested in fresh match ups against anyone he hadn’t wrestled before, but also told Ross that The Rock simply wasn’t interested.
“I can remember many, many years ago, as I came back,” Michaels said, “Pat Patterson asked about that and I said, ‘Sure, whoever you want.’ But he wasn’t interested, and that was it. But I liked anybody that I hadn’t been in the ring with.”
“The Heartbreak Kid” also said that from a company standpoint, WWE always tried to match him up against someone new when it came time for WrestleMania. He insisted he never specifically asked for anyone, except for suggesting a match against McMahon.
